The picture is ascribed to Jan Miel, who moved to Rome in the 1630s. He specialized in scenes of contemporary life referred to as bambocciate, after the nickname of the creator of the genre, Pieter van Laer. Although Miel's work stands in contrast to the premise of classical landscapes, he is known to have collaborated with Gaspard Dughet and it has been suggested that the landscape in this picture was painted by Dughet with the figures added by Miel.

Work of art specs

Work of art title:

"Landscape with a Battle between Two Rams"

Classification of the work of art:

painting

General category:

classic art

Artwork century:

17th century

Created in:

1640

Approximate age of artwork:

more than 380 years old

Painted on:

oil on canvas

Artwork original dimensions:

68 1/4 x 97 5/8 in (173,4 x 248 cm)

Museum:

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Museum location:

New York City, New York, United States of America

Web URL:

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

License type:

public domain

Courtesy of:

The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, Gift of Princess Brancaccio, 1893

Artwork creditline:

Gift of Princess Brancaccio, 1893

About the painter

Artist:

Jan Miel

Additional names:

Giovanni Miele Scolare di Pussino, JEAN MIEL autrement BIKE, Johann Miel, van Bieke, Melo alias Bieke, Giovanni Mielle, Giovanni Meil, John Meila, Miele Jan, Jan Miell, Jan Mee, Miglio toegenaamt Bieke, Milo alias Bieke, I. However, the colors of the printing material, as well as the printing might diverge to a certain extent from the image on your screen. Depending on your screen settings and the condition of the surface, not all colors will be printed as exactly as the digital version shown here. In view of the fact that the art prints are printed and processed by hand, there may as well be slight discrepancies in the size and exact position of the motif.

© Copyright | Artprinta (www.artprinta.com)
