Among the artist’s last works, it displays the firm draftsmanship, clear articulation of form, and brilliant color effects that had won him critical recognition. Within a composition based on precise perspective, Picknell applied impressionistic touches of pigment. Canvases such as this one define his stylistic position between the academicians with whom he had studied and the French Impressionists.

Piece of art table

Artwork title:

"Banks of the Loing"

Categorization of the artpiece:

painting

Umbrella term:

modern art

Time:

19th century

Year of creation:

1894

Artwork age:

more than 120 years old

Original medium of artwork:

oil on canvas

Artwork original size:

58 1/4 x 83 in (148 x 210,8 cm)

Exhibited in:

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Museum location:

New York City, New York, United States of America

Website of the museum:

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

License:

public domain

Courtesy of:

The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, Bequest of Mrs. Gertrude Flagg, 1905

Creditline:

Bequest of Mrs. Gertrude Flagg, 1905

Quick overview of the artist

Name:

William Lamb Picknell

Alias names:

Picknell Lucien, W.
