In revenge for not having been invited to the wedding of Peleus and Thetis, Eris, goddess of discord, launches in the assembly a golden apple on which is inscribed the motto "To the most beautiful". Immediately, Hera, Athena and Venus vindicated the superiority of their beauty and thus the possession of this pomme.Pour between them, Mercury seeks the views of the young shepherd Paris, offering the apple to Venus because it promised in return the love of the most beautiful mortal, Helen. It is this moment that is featured in the table Rottenhammer. Pâris is not interested in naked bodies of other goddesses, and offers the golden apple to Venus, crowned by Love. This design of the crowning is taken of a composition of Raphael, engraved by Raimondi. The most curious element of this array is lost and exhausted look of Paris. Should we see an announcement of the disasters of the Trojan war, triggered when remove Helen? This attitude is reflected in the tables of German painter Seniors (Lucas Cranach the Elder, "The Judgment of Paris", New York, The Metropolitan Museum of Art). It will tend to disappear in his later works (H. Rottenhammer, "The Judgment of Paris", Private Collection), following the stay that passes in Venice (1596-1606). Contact with the works of Veronese and Titian, will mark his painting.

This small painting on copper was in the collection of Mr. W. Hope to death of it. May 11, 1858, was organized the sale of his old paintings of Flemish, Dutch and French. "The Judgment of Paris" bore the number 18 and was sold 455 francs. This is perhaps Eugene Auguste Dutuit or who acquired it, since the work was part of their collection to the late nineteenth century. In 1902, Auguste Dutuit bequeathed to the City of Paris.
