A herder drives his cattle through a ford in the river. The unruly creatures splash water, to the displeasure of a peasant woman, who is also wading through the water. Another woman is mounted on a laden ox. Berchem combined the southern character of the landscape with the kind of pine trees that one would expect to see in the north.
