When San Rocco in Venice was remodelled in 1733, three of the leading artists of the time were asked to do altarpieces for the church. Two commissions went to the Venetian Marco Ricci (1676-1730), one to the Roman Trevisani (1656-1746), and one to the Neapolitan Solimena, who was regarded as one of Europe’s finest (and most expensive) painters at the time.

In all likelihood the intention was to compare the three Italian schools of painting with each other.

The emotional intensity of Solimena's picture Ricci’s lavishly coloured extravaganzas and Trevisani’s conventionally based pathos are no match for the emotional intensity of Solimena’s picture.

The museum's version The museum’s version may be a colour study for the finished painting – which is, however, narrower and finished with a semicircle on top – or, which is more likely, it may be a replica created to be used for teaching at Solimena’s private school of painting. The elegant composition, forceful use of strong contrasts between light and shade, and the figures’ classically restrained poses are all typical of Solimena who looked equally for inspiration within the solemn Baroque and the cheerful Rococo.

Choose your preferred item material

The product dropdown menu provides you with the possibility to pick a material and a size of your choice. We allow you to pick your favorite size and material among the following product individualization options:

  • Acrylic glass print: The print on acrylic glass, often referenced as a plexiglass print, will change the original into great décor. The work of art is being custom-made with modern UV printing machines. The result of this are sharp and vivid color tones.
  • Canvas print: A canvas print is a printed canvas mounted on a wooden frame. A canvas print makes a cosy and pleasant atmosphere. Hanging a canvas print: Canvas prints are relatively low in weight, meaning that it is quite simple to hang the Canvas print without the use of extra wall-mounts. Hence, canvas prints are suitable for any type of wall.
  • Poster print (canvas material): The Artprinta poster is a UV printed canvas with a slightly rough texture on the surface. A poster print is optimally qualified for putting your art replica with the help of a custom-made frame. Please note, that depending on the size of the canvas poster print we add a white margin of something between 2-6cm around the artwork in order to facilitate the framing.
  • Metal (aluminium dibond print): Aluminium Dibond prints are prints on metal with a true depth effect. For your Aluminium Dibond print, we print the artwork onto the surface of the white-primed aluminum. The colors are luminous in the highest definition, the details of the print are crisp. This direct UV print on Aluminum Dibond is the most popular entry-level product and is a contemporary way to display fine art prints, since it puts 100% of the viewer’s focus on the image.
