The work was once identified as a portrait of Madame de Sevigne wrote; the idea may seem attractive, but Madame de Sevigne, whose beginnings were published on 30 years after his death, did not considered himself a writer and therefore had no reason to be represented with a pen in hand; Moreover, a great lady of the seventeenth century would not have thought for one moment to be painted in the heat of action inconsistent with its social condition. It could be a portrait of Antoinette Des Houlières (1634-1694), who published several books of poetry and was one of the first "letter of Women" recognized as such.
