This picture shows the old walled city of Rome with the Porta di San Giovanni through which had to drive the traveler to get to Frascati. In the background, the characteristic silhouette of the Alban Hills stretches. Josef Rebell used a highly unique picture composition, because the area outside the city walls, which, after all, occupies the bottom half of the image shows only a flat meadow. To space to illustrate, he raised the animals forward large forward and designed the figures and carriages further back considerably smaller. This size difference, he tried to reduce by a clever lighting design by showing he illuminated the area only from the middle of the sun. Rebel, who is one of the most important Austrian landscape painters had, at that time already spent many years in Italy. A little later, in 1824, he returned to Vienna to chair and to the Imperial Collection as a director to lead the class of landscape painting at the Vienna Academy. [Sabine Grabner 8/2009]

Important note: We try to describe the art products as exact as possible and to demonstrate them visually in our shop. Still, the tone of the print materials, as well as the print result may vary marginally from the representation on your monitor. Depending on the screen settings and the nature of the surface, not all color pigments can be printed one hundret percent realistically. Because all art prints are processed and printed manually, there might also be slight variations in the motif's exact position and the size.
