Carrière’s subjects were often drawn from his family life, and this work may well depict the artist’s wife, Sophie (1855–1922), sewing with one of their daughters, who may be winding yarn, with the strands hanging between her upraised hands. The effect of mistiness, rendered in nuanced brown hues, is entirely characteristic of Carrière’s style, which was widely celebrated during and after his lifetime.

Oil on canvas was used by the European artist as the technique for the painting.
