This painting porpose a retrospective view of the room French Theater before the curtain on the first représentaiton the part of Victor Hugo; "Hernani". The painter was inspired by the story that Theophile Gautier (recognizable in the foreground, left, with her red vest) has made in his "History of Romanticism". This story has contributed to the formation of the legend of "the first of Hernani" and his "battle" which is dated the beginning of the drama romance. The first was actually a success but "conventional" chahutèrent all the performances that followed.

This painting is part of orders placed by Paul Meurice for the creation of the museum, various artists to illustrate some of his works or important moments of his life.
