Hubert Robert was portrayed by a sculptor at work in a church. If the subject is not a problem of interpretation, the identity of the sculptor represented the saint and that of the church, were the opinion media divergents.En 1770 painting was described as the "A Sculptor ending Statues in place of the Church of St. Peter in Rome. " Later, Mr. and Mrs. Strauss, who then possessed the painting, identified as the "Houdon sculpting the statue of St. Bruno in the church of Santa Maria degli Angeli, Rome" .We now goes to the first description. The insertion of monumental sculptures between colossal fluted pilasters and the presence of the confessional describe, in fact, the Basilica of St. Peter's. The sculptor at work could be Slodtz Michelangelo, who created a statue of St. Bruno for the basilica, before the arrival of the French painter in Rome. But nothing proves whether Slodtz well or that the statue represents Bruno. In the early years of his stay in Rome, Hubert Robert was imbued with the Eternal City, crisp on the spot everything that caught his eye. This table is a perfect example of small compositions he realized then. The appearance sketched canvas, "fa presto" that characterizes his works of study, combined with a white light rewarding sculpture, confer its charm at this time of life immortalized in paint. Boldly, Hubert Robert translated the monumentality of the Roman site, in which the man appears to be the servant of the great Christian figures.

The table was on the sale of Baudoin collection in Paris February 15, 1770 (No. 313). The second great collection of which he was part was that of Julius Strauss in the twentieth century. The City of Paris acquired the painting with the Cailleux gallery, Paris, March 7, 1961 (Sale Strauss, No. 20, purchased 35 430frs).

Your favorite work of art will be made thanks to modern UV direct printing technology. Our plexiglass protects your custom art print against light and external influences for many decades.
  • Poster print (canvas material): The poster is a UV printed flat canvas paper with a slightly roughened texture on the surface. It is best suited for putting your art copy with a customized frame. Please note, that depending on the absolute size of the poster we add a white margin of approximately 2-6 cm around the print motif, which facilitates the framing with your custom frame.
  • Aluminium print (aluminium dibond): These are metal prints on aluminium dibond material with an impressive depth effect, which creates a fashionable look by having a surface , which is not reflective. A direct Aluminium Dibond Print is your excellent start to fine reproductions on aluminum. The white and bright sections of the work of art shine with a silk gloss but without glare. The colors are vivid and luminous, fine details appear crisp and clear, and you can notice the matte appearance of the print.
