Description from Art Institute Chicago (© - Art Institute Chicago - Art Institute Chicago)

Ralph Earl garnered portrait commissions primarily from wealthy rural landowners in Connecticut, New York, and Vermont. A loyalist, Earl fled America for England during the Revolutionary War, developing his portrait style, in turn, by studying with Benjamin West (an American painter in London) and through contact with English artists. Returning in 1785, Earl painted this portrait of Noah Smith late in his career, having melded his British training with a simpler, linear style that appealed to his clients of the rural gentry. In this work, Smith, chief justice of the Vermont Supreme Court, sits assuredly before the viewer; the map at hand, pastoral view at left, and volumes of books behind him signal the sitter’s prominent position as a man of affairs in the young nation.

Select your product material

The product dropdown menu ofers you the possibility to choose your individual material and size. The following sizes and materials are the options we offer you for individualization:

  • Metal print (aluminium dibond): Aluminium Dibond prints are prints on metal with a true depth effect.
  • Canvas print: The UV printed canvas material applied on a wood frame. A canvas generates the special impression of three dimensionality. The advantage of canvas prints is that they are relatively low in weight, which means that it is easy to hang your Canvas print without extra wall-mounts. A canvas print is suitable for any type of wall.
  • Printed acrylic glass (with real glass coating on top): The acrylic glass print, which is sometimes described as a plexiglass print, will transform your favorite original into stunning home décor. With a glossy acrylic glass art print contrasts and minor color details become more visible thanks to the fine tonal gradation of the print.
  • Poster on canvas material: A poster print is a UV printed canvas with a nice texture on the surface. It is ideally appropriate for framing your art replica using a customized frame. Please bear in mind, that depending on the size of the poster print we add a white margin between 2-6cm around the artwork, which facilitates the framing with a custom frame.
