A large area of rocks and stones in the lower part dominates the view. Only in the distance behind the trees and bushes you can see the ruins of Liechtenstein, who gave the painting the title. At the unspectacular nature cut the painter proven his ability to translate the phenomenon of direct sunlight in painting. The soft, golden hue, according to is the late afternoon - it is also the long shadows, let the nearly overlooked a latching figure at first glance explain. "Waldmüller came in his old age to the incident, in order to obtain a bright color, one must paint in the sunlight," joked contemporaries of the painter and sneered at the same time about "the strange flash color Tight Bung". Only in 1900 it was recognized modern thinking. Since that time Waldmüller is undisputedly considered the most important Viennese painter of the 19th century. [Sabine Grabner 8/2009]
