What does the curator team of the Statens Museum for Kunst (National Gallery of Denmark) write about this 17th century work of art from the painter Philips Koninck? (© Copyright - by Statens Museum for Kunst (National Gallery of Denmark) - Statens Museum for Kunst (National Gallery of Denmark))

Philips Koninck is best known for his panoramic landscapes, but he also painted everyday scenes, religious scenes, and portraits.

Like so many other Dutch 17th century artists he had to supplement his earnings with other jobs and sources of income; Koninck was also an innkeeper and owned a ferry service operating between Amsterdam, Leiden, and Rotterdam.

Inspired by Rembrandt Philips Koninck is believed to have been a student of Rembrandt (1609-1669), although no conclusive evidence supports this theory. Whatever the case may be, Koninck was certainly inspired by Rembrandt, particularly in his juvenile works from the late 1630s.

The idealised Dutch panorama Unlike other Dutch landscape painters Koninck focused on one particular type of landscape: idealised Dutch panoramas inspired by the countryside of Gelderland.

Koninck as a mature artist The painting shown here is typical with its high viewpoint from a hilltop overlooking a flat landscape. It shows Koninck as a mature artist who has developed his own personal style through years of application. Here, he worked with an unusually sketch-like style and a large-scale format which in itself served to heighten the significance of the genre, from being modest cabinet pieces to something approaching the status of the great history paintings.

Product materials our customers can pick from

For every product we offer different materials and sizes. Pick your favorite size and material among the following options:

  • Canvas: The printed canvas, which should not be confused with a painting on a canvas, is a digital copy applied onto canvas. The great advantage of canvas prints is that they are relatively low in weight. That means, it is easy to hang up the Canvas print without any wall-mounts. Hence, canvas prints are suited for all types of walls.
  • Acrylic glass print (with real glass coating on top): An print on acrylic glass, often described as a an art print on plexiglass, will transform the artwork into brilliant décor. The work of art is being printed with modern UV printing technology. The major advantage of a plexiglass print is that contrasts and small color details will be more exposed thanks to the fine gradation in the picture.
  • Aluminium dibond (metal print): Aluminium Dibond prints are metal prints with an impressive effect of depth. The Direct Print on Aluminum Dibond is the ideal start to art prints made with aluminum. For your Print On Aluminum Dibond, we print your favorite artwork on the aluminium white-primed surface. The white & bright parts of the original work of art shimmer with a silk gloss but without the glare.
  • Printed poster (canvas material): The poster is a UV printed canvas paper with a slightly roughened texture on the surface, which resembles the actual artwork. Please note, that depending on the size of the poster print we add a white margin of approximately 2-6cm round about the work of art, which facilitates the framing with your custom frame.
