Victor Hugo standing with his left hand on the back of a chair, the right bent on hip in black suit where you notice the insignia of Chevalier of the Legion of Honor which he was awarded in 1825 to the age of 23, Charles X.

This small painting is a reduction in the large portrait of Victor Hugo, presented to the 1839 Salon by Louis Boulanger (inv. 2014.0.101), the painter created so that it is available to Juliette Drouet. Letters of Juliette Drouet to Victor Hugo afford to follow in part the series. Thus on February 23, she wrote: "I still have a thorn in the side which will be removed to me that when Mr. Baker has made a copy and have it pinned to my wall. Until then I can not think about it without feeling it hurts. It is clear that this gentleman like nobody since adjourn so lightly the happiness of others. Besides, my lot is to wait and the original and the copy, and neither one nor the other come, so it is always missing happiness home. ". Then on March 3, she returns to the subject: "You'll know, my beloved, I dreamed PORTRAIT EXHIBITION and all night. I do not know how I will wait for Baker has done his copy. Still, if to let me have patience, you give me the small medal in question, but you do not think about and just I have to do without all is sad, go, and you may have wrong to submit to such a strict diet. "Juliette looked forward to the end of the Show and the return of the portrait in the artist that will allow him to make a copy, as she wrote on March 26:" I love you. I wish the exhibition was over, it weighs like a nightmare. And besides, I do have my dear little portrait after and this is one more reason for me to desire the end with even more impatience. "It was not until July 10 to see a new entry:" If you could see mr Boulanger you would ask him to give me your dear little picture for your birthday would become mine as well as anything in the world except our trip, can not me more pleasure and conscience that would not cost him much trouble to do for that time; ie for ten days. " Finally on July 21, she expressed her happiness to be in possession of the portrait: "Dear (sic) soul well thank Mr. Baker for me, because thanks to him I second you. So really it's not too much for all the hours of absence and isolation in which you let me. [...] What happiness I have my Toto !!! it is very like what happiness! what happiness! I'm not alone now and I could kiss any time of day and night my poor little liked, so good, so gentle, so noble and charming. What happiness! Oh ! what happiness! "
