Key monuments are shown as fragments of a compositional whole that is equal parts natural and urban, ancient and modern. In the foreground, the broken contours of a grassy row of arches playfully anticipate the forms of the architecture beyond. This Picturesque device contrasts with the purely functional scaffolding abutting the Colosseum, which was erected by the architect Giuseppe Valadier about 1822–23 to help stabilize the amphitheater’s long-crumbling outer wall.

Background data about the artwork

Painting title:

"View of the Colosseum and the Arch of Constantine from the Palatine"

Artwork categorization:

painting

General category:

modern art

Century:

19th century

Created in the year:

1822

Artwork age:

over 190 years

Medium of original artwork:

oil on paper, laid down on canvas

Original size:

11 1/4 x 15 1/4 in (28,6 x 38,7 cm)

Museum / collection:

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Place of museum:

New York City, New York, United States of America

Website of the museum:

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

License of artwork:

public domain

Courtesy of:

The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, The Whitney Collection, Gift of Wheelock Whitney III, and Purchase, Gift of Mr. and Mrs. Charles S. Considering that all our art prints are processed and printed by hand, there may also be slight variations in the size and exact position of the motif.

© Copyright of - Artprinta (www.artprinta.com)
