George Catlin is best-known for his depictions of Native American culture. Despite being a highly controversial artist, Catlin's portraits, like this one, provide a 19th-century view on American Indian life. Particularly noticeable here is the 'Eagle's' costume, her jewellery, and the red paint on her face and hair.
