In this canvas, his meticulous attention to setting—as in the crumbling brickwork at the end of the bridge—is animated by sprightly figures: passersby on the road, a wader in the water, and a dog hovering at the stream’s edge. This painting is thought to have been sent by Watts to the Royal Academy exhibition of 1828. A second version of the subject is in the Philadelphia Museum of Art; a third version is unlocated.

Artpiece specs

Piece of art name:

"An Old Bridge at Hendon, Middlesex"

Classification:

painting

Broad category:

modern art

Temporal classification:

19th century

Artwork year:

1828

Approximate age of artwork:

around 190 years

Original medium of artwork:

oil on canvas

Original dimensions:

21 3/4 x 32 3/4 in (55,2 x 83,2 cm)

Museum / location:

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Place of museum:

New York City, New York, United States of America

Museum's webpage:

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

License of artwork:

public domain

Courtesy of:

The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, Gift of George A. Because our art prints are processed and printed manually, there might also be slight variations in the motif's size and exact position.

© Copyright protection - Artprinta (www.artprinta.com)
