The scene takes place in the gallery of battles, the Palais Royal. The Duke of Orleans is surrounded by a delegation of MPs came to offer him the lieutenant general of the kingdom.

The title of lieutenant general of the kingdom had been awarded, with few periods of history, to princes who exercised royal authority in the absence or incapacity of the legitimate king. The Duke of Orleans exercised power with such, from July 31 to August 9, 1830, before being proclaimed King of the French. Sketch for the painting commissioned in 1836 for the 1830 room at the Museum of Versailles (MV1809) and presented at the 1836 Salon (nº418).
