On the left, in a stable where we distinguish a cow, the Virgin holds in her arms the infant Jesus surrounded by a golden halo. Behind her stands a shepherd with his crook. On the right, a group of men dressed in oriental clothes and their horses, a horse and a camel, crowded around the child. The Magi bow down to the newborn and give him precious gifts.

As indicated in a letter to Frederic Chassériau, brother of the painter, this work would be the last completed painting by Theodore Chasseriau, shortly before his death on October 8, 1856. An Adoration of the Shepherds (Paris, private collection) performed just before passes to its counterpart.
