The image is one of the most important works of Austrian painting. It has Waldmüller not just as impressive portraitist, but also as an outstanding landscape painter. The special feature of the painting is the successful combination of man and nature. The sitter is not set in front of the landscape, but it is in the middle of the hilly and wooded terrain that surrounds it. This is credible mainly due to the lighting situation, because this sunlight spreads over nature, plays around also portrayed himself. 35 years included the painter when he painted in fine packaged as walkers in the Vienna Woods. The picture was taken late in May or in June, as we reveal the pasted prominently bottom left peony. [Sabine Grabner 8/2009]
