Illustration for the title banner of Chapter XLIII of Victor Hugo's novel "Hans of Iceland." The scene shows ethel driving near an unknown woman who designates him a grilled opening where she will attend the trial of his father and Christian Ordener, and corresponds to the text: "On the side of the cell opposite the door is a grilled large opening through which enters a light-torches and torches. Before this opening is a bench on which is placed a veiled woman and dressed in black, who motioned him to sit with her. "

In the volume "A Novel," published in 1889, the complete works of Victor Hugo of the National Edition by Emile Testard and Co.
