A young naked woman with black hair is encouraged by her two companions to bathe in the water of a river. The bather glides a rock, laying his right foot on a stone placed in water. To his left, a blonde bather, seated on a rock feet in the water, puts a hand on the arm of her companion. To his right, a brunette woman in a red skirt and a white shirt, arm resting on the branch of a tree, holds the bather so it does not slip.

Courbet invented a new way of painting the female body as opposed to the idealized beauty of the academic nude. The theme of bathers, treated several times since 1853, participates in this sensual celebration of nature whose undergrowth Franche-Comté were Courbet place of election.
