The Jerome astronomer La Lande (1732-1807) is shown in mid-body wearing a Spanish costume. Sitting right hand resting on a globe, the other on his knee, he turns his face, three-quarters slightly raised, to his left. In front of the world, the painting equipment (brushes, leaves, vials) is on the table. Fragonard respects the physiognomy of its model with a receding hairline to remove the ugliness by the spirited touches and vibrant colors characteristic of his style.

Reappeared in 1921, when the table is said to be the portrait of Charles Naudin, astronomer and pastel. Due to the presence of the globe, most historians believe today, but without certainty, that Fragonard painted Jerome La Lande (Joseph Jerome Le Francis said Lalande, 1732-1807), a famous astronomer his time. Lalande gained fame by providing, in the nearest month, the passage of Halley's comet, it also calculated the distance from the Earth to the Moon. Facial features, including very prominent forehead and balding strangely reminiscent documented portraits of Jerome LaLande, including a terracotta bust sculpted by Houdon. This work is related perhaps to the famous series of fantasy portraits including the Louvre museum preserves several paintings. This is a group portraits quickly brushed in the same format, in which the artist depicted his friends or clients, as Diderot, Mademoiselle Guimard, a famous dancer, and the Abbot of St. No. These figures are represented at the waist, adorned with rich costumes "Fancy" was then called "the Spanish", and along with some accessories that could symbolize the profession of the model. Although slightly different size from the rest of the series, the picture of the Petit Palais is characteristic of the way of these kind of portraits.
