Art 20th century
20th century art refers to the period of modern art that started around the beginning of 20th century and lasted all through until 21st century. This period of art is known to be a revolutionary one since many individual artists and arts came into existence during this time. The 20th century art style or movement was largely influenced by the ideologies and philosophies prevailing in the 20th century. As such, it is often characterized by the emergence of new and radical ideas in the society such as feminism, socialism, nihilism and globalization. Some of the most influential art movements in 20th century were impressionism, dadaism, surrealism and abstract expressionism. Among these different styles of arts, one particular style stood out as having a unique social characteristic that made it distinct from other styles. This uniqueness was largely influenced by several factors such as politics, religion and culture, making the art style become specific to one geographical location. Examples of these styles include: Art Deco was a movement that started in France and spread to other parts of Europe including Britain, Italy and Germany. It is characterized by clean lines and geometric forms that also depict modern life in those areas during early 20th century. The style depicts more of a social history and is used as decoration in homes, offices and public buildings. German Expressionism was an art movement that emerged before the First World War but existed from 1905 to 1925. It started in Germany although it had influences from other countries like Belgium and France. This style of art gives out full expression through thick lines, exaggerations and contrasting colors to portray the artist's emotions and views on society. Surrealism was an art movement that emerged in early 20th century, mainly in Europe. It is characterized by the use of dream-like imagery such as the flying machines, morphing landscapes and unnatural human anatomy among others. This movement gave out works that had a dream like quality of art. The common theme in all these movements is their utilization of new and innovative forms of expression to portray the artists views on society. Furthermore, all these styles also sought to challenge the traditional art style or movement that existed before them. However, it must be noted that most these art movements were short lived due to the political, economic and social instability that existed in many parts of Europe during this time. During the 20th century, there was a great number of individual artists who were very creative and unique in their styles. Among these famous artists include Pablo Picasso, Andy Warhol and Salvador Dali.
