Original description from the museum (© - Petit Palais - Musée des Beaux-arts de la Ville de Paris - Petit Palais - Musée des Beaux-arts de la Ville de Paris)

The St. Martin warrior is represented here in the manner of a St. George or St. Demetrios: saddle on a horse richly arnaché, the saint is about to cut his coat with his sword to share it with beggar appeared at his feet. The hand of God is represented in the upper left of the composition.

The icon shows the most famous episode from the life of St. Martin. Legend has it that in 337, while Martin was legionary stationed at Amiens, he caught a cold winter day a beggar half-naked at the gates of the city. Stopping his horse, he cut his cloak in two and gave half to the poor. The following night, Christ appeared to him to thank him for this act of compassion.Cette work is probably unique in the production of icons Creto-Venetian. The Latin inscription reveals that his sponsor is probably Italian and Catholic.
