The Elbe Sandstone Mountains south of Dresden is famous because of its bizarre rock formations. The German Romantic painter Caspar David Friedrich chose the "Gateway to the Neurathen" for his performance. But he was interested in spite of specific studies in the landscape not only to a faithful reproduction. He took the nature only to attend a symbolic statement. Most of his paintings deals with the relationship of humans to their own transience. So the ravine of death can be seen with the tree stumps as a symbol, the fallen fir as a symbol of the death of the Christians and the towering peaks of the fog in the background as a symbol of God. Thus, the entire composition of dying, death and resurrection is. [Sabine Grabner 8/2009]
