This portrait can be dated from 1835, the inscription on canvas that may relate either at the beginning or at the end of the performance is still in its order for the anniversary of the eleven years of Leopoldina. It was that year that the young child starts to go to catechism book that the time seems to symbolize. The portrait is of great iconographic interest by indicating it can give the apartment in the Place Royale: the chair, the time of the fifteenth century book, open a thumbnail of the Dormition of the Virgin which it is likely that he belonged to Victor Hugo. The museum also preserves among the "relics" family of Leopoldina, two fragments of her dress door here, one of which is preserved in a frame of red velvet with brass nail with a representative drawing of Madame Hugo daughter reading, signed and dated April 1837 and two to his father, "Oh! beautiful little dress / she was, you remember? "(" Contemplations ", IV, VI). "Leopoldina at the time the Book" is of course closer to the "Portrait of Victor Hugo with his son (François) Victor" with the Auguste de Chatillon and which dates from 1836. This painting was then hung on walls of the apartment in the Place Royale was in the custody of Paul Meurice after the sale of the writer's furniture in 1852. She then joined the exiled poet. Remained at Hauteville House, it was given to the City along with the remains in 1927. It was reported in Paris in 1947.
