As the undisputed leader of the Realist movement, Gustave Courbet played a crucial role in the development of modern French painting. But critics and the public did not easily accept his large, naturalistic, and unsentimental depictions of commonplace, often rural subjects; they called him the “apostle of ugliness.”

In 1859 the male French artist Gustave Courbet painted this artpiece. The original measures the size - 129 × 97,5 cm (50 3/4 × 38 3/8 in). Oil on canvas was used by the artist as the technique for the painting. The original artwork was inscribed with the text: inscribed, lower left, on counter: G. C.. The painter, sculptor, communard Gustave Courbet was a European artist from France, whose style can primarily be classified as Realism. The European painter was born in the year 1819 in Ornans, Bourgogne-Franche-Comte, France and passed away at the age of 58 in 1877.
