The "Pieta" is a theme emerged from the late Middle Ages, as devotion media. It developed in Italy in the late fifteenth century in works dimensions increasingly important. Artists have established specific codes of representation to this iconographie.Traditionnellement, the "Pietà" describes Christ died, lying on the lap of his mother who is crying. An emphasis is given to the wounds of Christ and the Virgin Mary stands out as an example of devotion. Here, other saints accompany this lamentation. In the foreground, St. John and Mary Magdalene, present at the Crucifixion, introduce a narrative element in the representation. They invite the faithful to meditate on the tortured body of Christ. John calls the faithful directly through the look, while Mary Magdalene refers stigma. Behind them St. Benedict and St. Francis are more timeless figures, whose presence at the foot of the Cross is anachronistic. They may be linked to the sponsors of the table. The symmetric composition disposed in a landscape is characteristic of Florentine painting the early sixteenth century, and in particular that of Raffaellino del Garbo.C'est in the workshop of the painter that was executed on the table. This allocation, which must Michel Laclotte, is supported by the composition of the "Lamentation" (Alte Pinakothek, Munich), painted by Raffaellino del Garbo, who was the model for that of our "Pieta".

The table included in the collection of Lord Northwick, until 1859 (Sales Thirlvtane House, Cheltenham, July 26, 1859, No. 890, p.81). It was exhibited in London in 1893, at the exhibition "Exhibition of Early Italian Art, New Gallery'.Puis, it is located in the collection of JSWS Erle Drax, until 1910 (sale, Christie's, London, 19 February 1910, No. 64, p.12) .The June 28, 1912, Charles Brunner dealer bought the painting from Mr. Nicholson, priced at 12,000 francs. He sold it to Charles Vincent Ocampo, on 29 July 1914 for $ 25 000frs.Du 4 October 1915 to 29 October 1921, the Argentine collector left his table on deposit at the Brunner Gallery. He then donated it reserved the usufruct, in 1931, the City of Paris, and raised the usufruct in 1942.
