The unidentified man is shown slightly by three quarters, the left elbow on a table. His face tilted slightly to his left, he fixed the audience before him. He wears a long brown curly. His jacket with red velvet, adorned with stitching and gold buttons, opened over a white shirt with an attached black tie loosened. The gentleman holds in his left hand an open round snuffbox, he is about to use snuff for his tobacco. Placed on a tissue surrounding the other arm, his right hand is facing the viewer, the thumb and forefinger are stretched. His gesture can also be interpreted as an invitation to visitors to snuff tobacco contained in the box that holds out. The bottom is decorated left a drapery effect.

Charles Vincent Ocampo acquired this painting May 12, 1903, to Charles Sedelmeyer, as a work of Nicolas Largillière for 12 000frs. In 1931 he donated it, subject to usufruct, to the City of Paris, and renounced the usufruct in 1942.
