1685 fick Cornelis van der Meulen i uppdrag av änkedrottning Hedvig Eleonora att utföra porträtt hennes båda avlidna söner prinsarna Gustav och Ulrik. Porträttet av prins Gustav, som dog när han endast var två år gammal, kan uppfattas på flera olika plan. Det kan betraktas som en trompe l'oeil målning med Nicolaes Millichs byst av prinsen i bildens centrum. Det kan också ses som ett vanitasstilleben, där föremålen som omger portätt har en symbolisk mening. Snäckan och såpbubblorna kan kopplas till Homo bulla-ikonografin där livets livets bräcklighet jämförs med såpbubblornas kortvarighet. Vanitassymboliken har sina rötter i antiken vilket understryks av bystens karaktär, som påminner om en romersk barnkejsare. Det finns även en antydan till hopp bland alla metaforerna i form av den lagerkrönta dödsskallen som är en försäkran om prinsens seger i ett kommande liv. Kopia
