Like many Dutch painters of the seventeenth century, Jan Both effected a trip to Rome to complete his training. He held landscapes, ancient ruins, and especially light. He met Claude jelly, says Lorrain, whose compositions marked his work, and he returned to Utrecht arms full of drawings. This mountainous landscape, titled "Pastoral" or sometimes "Dancers in a Landscape", depicts a very Italianate kind. A hot sun sets on fields.
