Old man profile, a beret

The Bite of bread is the only painting by Peel for the state on the occasion of an order from the Department of Fine Arts in 1881 on the theme of "Charity". The implementation of this large composition (National Fund of Contemporary Art) will not begin until 1900 and will end in 1908. Ten preparatory sketches are preserved at the Petit Palais. They are painted in a dark shades in the manner of ink wash. The characters are represented by groups or individually, scale. Urban poverty affects primarily a workforce unskilled, sick and injured workers, that economic crises leave unemployed and destitute. Given the delay of social reform, Catholic organizations still occupy at the end of the nineteenth century a prominent place in charitable activity. Open Rue Cujas, the work of the Bite of bread is named in reference to the Last Supper of Jesus with the apostles.
