Herbert Eulenberg was alive one of the most important German dramatist and writer. His pacifist attitude was transformed by the experience of World War I in an open anti-militarism, which would certainly be almost become him under the Nazi regime's undoing, he would have been in the Düsseldorf bourgeoisie and the German artistic circles not as well integrated. His portrait lives primarily from the intense gaze of the sitter, which is to escape almost impossible. This look, the narrow mouth and the book collected come to represent an intensive survey, urging them to take a stand and to examine the conscience. Certainly Corinth met so that the main characteristic of this man who was the face of adversity to his unconditional political and humanitarian commitment with all its consequences. Before breast Eulenberg keeps a small book unopened in both hands. It appears to be small, in 1917 published font Corinth to trade a painter of our time, keeps the Eulenberg with the back to the viewer. [Dietrun Otten, 2009] Lovis Corinth is one of the most important German painters of the late 19th and early 20th century. On his oeuvre, the stylistic transformations along the way can be read to modernity: in a variety of genres has his work a confrontation with the painting tradition with contemporary French influences and combines the impressionistic style with protoexpressionistischen tendencies. As a founding member and central protagonist of the Berlin Secession as art theory as a teacher and author of writings was Corinth part of a movement that those opposed to the reactionary Wilhelmine art notions of internationalizing modernity. Corinth painted the influential dramatist and author Herbert Eulenberg, in 1917 the book Lovis Corinth. A painter of our time; had brought his life's work twice: during the first portrait from 1918 Eulenberg in profile view shows and is of a muted color, survived the second of 1924 alone the drilling-questioning look of the sitter. The psychologizing intensity is amplified by the open, sometimes impasto aufschichtenden, sometimes drawing scarce brush stroke and is characteristic of the expressive late work of the artist.
