A fun cast of 10 characters gathered on a platform. On the left, three teenage girls in bikini standing waiting their turn. Beside them, a little boy holding a drum cries leaning on a pole to which is attached a ring with a parrot. The largest girl puts a hand on the size and relies on the other to a post. An older woman stands partly hidden under a sign "30 Seconds". Next, over a bass drum, another parrot is shown a ring. In the center of the platform stands a white clown with a painted frog on his coat. Near him the bonisseur troop keeps his hands crossed on his chest with a satisfied air. To the left of clown, a dwarf sitting on the stairs turns toward the viewer. On the right, three elders sitting hold in their hands the instruments under a sign saying "French orchestra" where a monkey is held.

Grimaces and misery is the most emblematic work of Peel. This monumental painting that caused a sensation at the 1888 Salon stays in the workshop of the Boulevard de Clichy until she entered the museum in 1913.
