Although he worked primarily in Dresden, a center for Romantic landscape painting during the early 19th century, Ludwig Richter—like many artists of the period—traveled to Rome as a young art student (1822–26). The Fountain at Grottaferrata, completed some years after Richter’s return to Germany, is based on his detailed drawings of the Italian countryside just outside of Rome and carefully captures the features that made this site famous, such as the fortified monastery in the background. With its classically composed yet acutely naturalistic landscape, folkish figures, and dramatic light, this work epitomizes a generation of artists who viewed the Italian landscape with Germanic sensibilities.

The more than 180 years old piece of art was created by Adrian Ludwig (Ludwig) Richter. The artwork has the following size: 113 × 99,5 cm (44 1/3 × 39 in) and was painted with the medium oil on canvas. "Signed and dated, l.l.: “L. Richter 1832”" is the masterpiece's original inscription. Today, this artpiece can be viewed in in the collection of Art Institute Chicago, which is one of the world’s great art museums, housing a collection that spans centuries and the globe.
