Already at age 17 was Carl Schindler from the publisher L. T. Neumann the order to an extensive series of military scenes that should serve as a template for lithographs. Both this work, as well as the diverse, sometimes colorful uniforms that marked the appearance of Vienna in the twenties and thirties of the 19th century may have been more crucial that he intensely dedicated to the soldiers genre. Military displays were to be found in Austrian art until the second half of the 18th century in the form of military costume leaves whose design was enlivened by the addition of background figures after 1800's. Although Schindler was able to experience personally in peacetime because of his weak health, either in war events, nor to military service and despite his short life (the painter died in the age of 21 from tuberculosis), he managed the hitherto little known in Austria "Soldiers Genre" in his heyday respectively. His part in the bourgeois, partly settled in the rural milieu stories, but also march representations and fight scenes account for the soldiers as people at the center. The Sentinel was made by the male painter Carl Schindler. The more than 180 year-old original was made with the size of 45 x 36,5 cm - frame dimensions: 70 x 62 x 8 cm and was produced with the technique of oil on canvas. What is more, the artpiece is part of the Belvedere's digital collection. We are glad to state that this masterpiece, which is part of the public domain is being supplied with courtesy of © Belvedere, Vienna, inventory number: 2102. Creditline of the artwork: transfer from the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna in 1921. Furthermore, alignment of the digital reproduction is portrait and has a ratio of 3 : 4, which implies that the length is 25% shorter than the width. The painter Carl Schindler was an artist, whose style can be attributed mainly to Realism. The Austrian artist was born in 1821 in Vienna and died at the age of 21 in the year 1842 in Laab im Walde, Lower Austria.
