See also the description of Inv 2148. The Arco di Miseno is located west of Naples, across from the island of Procida. Through the rock archway you see the island of Nisida, right in the distance Mount Vesuvius. Rebel followed with this image the effect and disaster pieces of Claude-Joseph Vernet (1714-1789), but decided not to "poetic exaggeration" of the scene. The whipped by the storm sea is described realistic, keep as a desperate attempt by the skipper, the boat from the cliffs. To increase the drama of the painter a sophisticated lighting control operated. The applause of his contemporaries was enormous. So wrote about Dorothea Schlegel to her husband, the philosopher Friedrich Schlegel: "This storm has Being painted with great truth, because I was taken quite like this and shudder."
