What does the website of the Belvedere say about this 19th century work of art from the painter Ignaz Dullinger? (© - Belvedere - www.belvedere.at)

Ignaz Dullinger illustrated in this painting a passage from the New Testament (Mark 12.41 to 44; Luke 21,1-4). In the right half of the Apostles of Jesus, pointing to the poor widow to the left surround. She throws just two lepta (the smallest coins of that money economy) into the offering box. In the relevant biblical passage Christ says that the poor widow had thereby sacrificed more than any other. Because the others would give of their abundance, the widow but everything they possessed. This contrast illustrates Dullinger examined by the representation of the rich man next to the woman of some coins from his bulging money bag. His behavior is exposed as avarice. The arrangement of the arcade arches reinforced the division of the two groups in the painting. [Lovecký 8/2010]
