The icon tells the birth of Christ celebrated on 25 December, Christmas Day. The Orthodox Church, that day, the famous "Nativity according to the Flesh of our Lord God and Savior Jesus Christ" and remembers "Shepherds who have seen the Lord" and to "worship of the Magi." These events, known by the Gospels are supplemented by elements from the tradition that serve up images of theological discourse on divine Incarnation itself as "real and not illusory" .While the dawn broke above the sea, the three wise men left hasten to follow the star that guides before it disappears. The shepherds, abandoning their herds, are questioning the miracle that brings their angels beside a piper, sheep drink from a source. On the right, Mary is recovering and looks half her child just born, which contemplates a donkey and an ox, and a choir of angels kneeling. Dog Almost asleep, the servants are preparing to bathe the child, while Joseph sat before two shepherds, ruminates the doubt that assails him.

Instead of integrating the Western motifs as part of an icon, the image is unusual juxtaposition of Italian style and the Byzantine style on both sides of a diagonal that connects the lower left corner in the upper right corner of this panel. The panoramic landscape that reflects the Italian-Flemish tradition of the time, not only has the distinction of occupying a totally unusual space but to be organized on the principle of perspective, missing by tradition in icons; the valleys that follow one another, help to deepen the field of vision and a blue sky covered with clouds replaces the gold background.
