El Greco depicts here an imagined scene featuring the Virgin Mary, Christ, Saint Joseph, Saint Anne and John the Baptist. It has been suggested that this depiction of Christ - being, as he is, in a deep sleep on his mother’s lap - is reminiscent of the pietà: a traditional scene in which Mary holds Christ’s body following the Crucifixion. If so, the image can be seen as a foreshadowing of Jesus’s eventual death.
