The sitter is Moritz Christian Count Fries (1777-1826), his wife Maria Theresa, born Princess Hohenlohe-Waldenburg-Schillingsfürst (1779-1819), and their son born in 1804 Moritz. Fries was one of the most important bankers and patrons of the arts in Vienna of the 19th century. This family portrait was taken during a trip through France. The painter François Gérard was at the height of his creative and was considered one of gefragtesten portraitist of the French aristocracy. The artist shows the young family in a mixture of private simplicity and representation. The count carries riding clothes, his wife a fashionable, hochtailliertes chemise dress without jewelry.
