A dead deer is suspended by the right hind paw with a tree trunk, the head resting on the ground. Blood flowed from the gash made in his throat. A bush with fall colors is leaning against the tree.

Great lover of hunting in Franche-Comté and Germany, Courbet painted many scenes game that earned him the admiration of critics and buyers orders. This painting is dedicated "to the friend Cluseret" officer and politician, military delegate of the Commune, which, like Courbet exile after 1871, found his friend in Switzerland.
