The busy businessman looks up briefly from his work when his wife and two of the couple’s children enter his office within the family’s home on Store Strandstræde in Copenhagen.

The Danish middle class With its clear demonstration of the pressures of work handled by the head of the family, the picture illustrates the fundamental values for the Danish middle classes circa 1830: Family and work. The home is sparingly furnished with no unnecessary ornamentation, reflecting the thriftiness prevalent in Denmark during the hard years that followed the Napoleonic wars.

Christian Waagepetersen The head of the family shown in the picture is the wine merchant Christian Waagepetersen, one of the men who clearly marked that the middle classes had become the dominant group within Danish society after the aristocracy’s centuries of dominance.Waagepetersen was keenly interested in art and music. He frequently threw musical soirees in his home, where the leading Danish composers and musicians attended alongside painters and sculptors.

Waagepetersen also commissioned several pictures addressing themes from his own life and work like this piece.

Select a art print material option

For every fine art print we offer different materials & sizes. That is why, we allow you to choose among the following options:

  • Printed poster (canvas material): The poster is a UV printed sheet of canvas with a slightly roughened surface texture. It is excellently designed for putting the art replica with a custom frame. Please note, that depending on the size of the canvas poster print we add a white margin 2-6cm around the artwork, which facilitates the framing with a custom frame.
  • Acrylic glass print: The acrylic glass print, which is sometimes referenced as a plexiglass print, will change the original artwork into beautiful home décor. In addition to that, the acrylic glass print offers a viable alternative option to canvas or aluminium dibond art prints. The artwork is being manufactured with the help of state-of-the-art UV direct print machines.
  • The canvas print: A canvas print is a printed canvas stretched on a wooden stretcher. A canvas has the sculptural impression of three dimensionality. In addition to that, a canvas creates a charming and comfy look. Canvas prints are relatively low in weight. This means, it is easy to hang the Canvas print without extra wall-mounts.
