English: Ingres’ neo-classical style is characterized by pure contours and figures based on classical sculpture and on Raphael. This small sketch is a study for a larger painting. The large version won Ingres the first prize in 1801 in the competition for the major Rome Scholarship. The scene is from the Iliad. Achilles, holding the lyre on his lap, gives his friends, headed by Odysseus in a red cloak, an astonished welcome. The friends are sent to negotiate with Achilles, who has rebelled against Agamemnon by laying down his weapons, visible to the left in the picture.

Important information: We try everything to describe our art products as accurate as we can and to illustrate them visually. Nonetheless, the pigments of the printed materials, as well as the imprint can vary to a certain extent from the representation on your device's monitor. Depending on the settings of your screen and the nature of the surface, not all color pigments can be printed as realistically as the digital version depicted here. Since all the art reproductions are processed and printed by hand, there might as well be minor differences in the motif's exact position and the size.
