Constant Coquelin debut at the Comédie-French in 1860, was appointed an associate in 1864 and remained there until 1886. After that, for several years, he gave performances in various theaters in Paris, Europe and America. In 1896 he took over the theater of the Porte Saint-Martin, where he was triumphantly create the role of Cyrano de Bergerac in the play by Edmond Rostand, December 28, 1897.
