In this large format, Roll fixed the memory of the first official celebration of the national holiday of the Republic Square. In the foreground, a crowd of passers-by and street vendors cheered the parade of troops which are distinguished caps and Bayonet guns at the bottom, while couples dance to the orchestra sounds installed on a temporary structure on the left. In the center of the crowd, in the foreground, a young boy sells tricolor rosettes arranged on a tray hanging from his neck to spectators. Roll was shown back in black frock coat with his young wife. Blue-white-red flags fixed on masts punctuate the decor; away, the statue of the Republic stands against a cloudy sky.

The state had commanded Roll a large painting to commemorate the festivities of 14 July 1880 and the erection Republic Square of the plaster model of the statue of the Morice brothers then in progress. Roll painted a huge canvas of 63 m2, completed for the Salon of 1882, is offered to the City of Paris in 1884. Panorama of the jubilation, this commissioned work meets all classes of the republican society.
