Courbet (1819-1877) holds in her arms a young woman identified as his girlfriend, Virginia Binet. The bindweed green wreath adorning the young woman's hair evokes a walk in the countryside ending at dusk. The last evening rays still stain the sky. The faces more brightly lit, are treated in perfect profile, like medals.

This picture of youth belongs to the series of self-portraits that Courbet was staged alternately in despair, for lovers, a cellist, a man smoking a pipe, wounded man or man on a belt.
