Two naked women sleep entwined on a rumpled bed. The painter opposes two feminine types playing on the contrast of skin tone and hair, a redhead with fair skin and a brown complexion matte. A hair comb, a broken necklace and beads were lost in the sheets. In the foreground, a bedside table is filled with pitchers and a cup. In the background, a porcelain vase is adorned with a bouquet of flowers.

The collector Khalil Bey tables is interested in Gustave Courbet as a painter of women and sensuality. Indeed, it has commissioned this table but also "L" Origin of the World "(1866) preserved in the Musée d'Orsay.
