In the middle of a crowded room tables, Ambroise Vollard (1866-1939) is sitting on a chair with a small cat on his lap. Back arched, head tilted slightly, falling a look, his attitude betrays a certain sleepiness known to all those who used to work with. Bottom left of the painting is "Portrait of Alfred Hauge" and on the back wall of the "elongated Women" Renoir.

Through Maurice Denis, Pierre Bonnard met the Ambroise Vollard art dealer in 1893. The artist painted several portraits of Vollard including this one which stands out for its large size. The presence of the cat is a trick to avoid Bonnard had imagined that his model falls asleep too easily during application session.
